This last Friday I found that Rumor can be false, and yes I knew that before I don't classify myself as one of those people who believe everything I hear but I categorize, remember and make note of things. So when I heard from one of Huma's previous Au-pairs that its harder to make friends who are girls AND Turkish. Which up until this point I believed to be relatively accurate I see the point she was making in that Turkish women don't want us foreigners in their business and stealing away their men and all that but it did seem a bit silly. All the women I have meet so far have been other foreigners and they are great friends, I really enjoy my coffee breaks, nights out, and people watching moments with these girls.
So I was shocked when on Friday night I meet one of the nicest, most helpful Turkish (young) Women so far. I forget her name which makes me feel really bad since there was no number exchange and I will not see her again, but here is the story.
So I was leaving to go to Metro City mall where Catherine and her BF were going to pick me up to take me back to their flat. I was supposed to get on bus number 59a, which of course was finished running for the day by the time I got to the bus stop. So after a few minutes of searching for someone to tell me which bus goes to Metro City I figured out I could hop onto 29s and make it there. So no worries, well the bus was packed with people by the time it was getting closer to my stop and I couldnt see out the windows to tell if mine was next or not. I began to ask people if they spoke english and a 16 yr old girl notices my frustration and made her way over to where I was and said she spoke english and would help me. I thanked her and we waited in the traffic jam together. I only needed her to show me where the stop was but it was she who was worried about me, she went to the bus driver and even though he told me the bus went to Metro City it didnt.... so the girl got off the bus with me in the middle of the highway and walked me to Metro City. The walk wasnt long only 4 blocks or so but I wouldnt have found it since the buildings are so tall you would have to know where you are going and in what direction to go. So I thanked her again and she said it was no problem and that she had some free time and would love to make sure I make it to my firends. I called them and sure enough they are stuck in traffic and asking if I can make it over to some restaurant down the street and they can get me there. This girl didnt know of the restaurant but she went with me, across the tunnel to the other side of the street, down a side street all the while asking people where the restaurant was. When we found it she even stayed with me till Catherine got there. It was so nice, she didnt have to, I was fine it was only 7pm. While we were walking to Metro City she was telling me stories about a terrorist attack they had here a few years ago similar to 9/11 she pointed out the building that was bombed and told me she was in class just 5 minutes away when it happened and that there was dust everywhere. She also pointed out cool monuments and fun facts about the city it was an amazing experience!
So Turkish women can be friendly to foreigners... maybe I will start my own Rumor
What a sweet heart! I wish you had someone like that with you everyday to make sure you were safe!
ReplyDeleteTurkish women get jalous of foreign girls if their boyfriends start `flirting` with the foreign girls while their girlfriends are standing right next to them... So Turkish women are also very friendly on one to one basis, but Turkish men are sometimes too friendly with other girls even when they are together with their gfs! :)
