Our first evening in Rome was pretty magical. We arrived later on and it was already dark so we walked to the Colosseum. This massive building was built by thousands of slaves purely for Romans entertainment over 2000 years ago. Today its only half there since being pilaged after the fall of Rome. The Colosseum was all lit up and sparking when we arrived, its massive size in the center of this antique Roman square was awe inspiring and we sat beneath it for a while and just took it all in. The colosseum represents Rome at its finest, its grand area used to hold countless gladiator fights, great hunts or massive beasts, and brutal crusifictions all for the entertainment of the approx 50,000 people it could hold. Near the Colosseum is the Forum and capitol hill which I talk about later. We continued on our nightly stroll down the small maze streets of Rome where drivers dont care that you are a pedestrian and the people dont care that you are walking as well. Its kind of a rude place to live all in all. We passed a few plazzas which Rome has many of, they all seem to have a Obliesk in the center which represents some moment of triumph or simply a celebration time or tribute. One awesome plaza was that of Plaza de Navona which has the four rivers fountain. Its a massive fountain representing 4 rivers from the four known continents of the time. There was the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube, and the Rio de la Plata from Uruguay. We visited the Trevi fountain next and anyone planning on coming to Rome really needs to see this place at night. There are tons of people sitting around enjoying the fountain or tossing coins into the waters. Its amazing to think that its being supplied with that much water all from ancient aquaducts. We tossed in our coins, hoping for a return someday then ventured on our way to the Spanish steps sat with some gelato then ventured on home.
