Today we spent our last day in Barcelona, after checking out of our hostel at 10am we were able to lock our things up and walk around the town again without our belongings. We have until 7pm to get on the night train to Switzerland so plenty of time to kill. Yesterday we spent our time on the beach, we walked the entire length of this one area by las Ramblas, the Mediterranean sea was a gorgeous teal blue but turned to a dark saphire color as you looked farther out. It was like 80 degrees but there was a strong wind that actually put the beach on a warning. Loud speakers came on and everyone was told to get out of the water, personally I have seen bigger waves but whatever! We walked along the shore line, dipping our toes in the water and watching the surfers when we realized that we had wondered into an area were clothing was optional and I saw way too much of things I didn´t want to see... Why do people run around when they are naked? Better question why lay spread eagle while naked? At least there is one way to get a perfect tan without lines... Regardless of my scorched eye balls and skin, the beach was wonderful!
We drank some wine last night and headed out to the Fiesta de Merci which is some kind of welcome to Automn/honoring some patron saint of Barcelona. Whatever you call it, in reality it was a reason for the ENTIRE town to take work/school off drink rediculous amounts of bad beer and then parade themselves down Las Ramblas and neighboring streets. So this brings me to a topic which i keep forgetting to mention, the show of PDA in this town is outrageous! we sat on the metro the other day and watched these two kids make out like they were alone in some room...then there are people all over the town just publically showing their effection in very PG 13 ways. Its very crazy to try and realize that even if that kind of public action makes me feel uncomfortable maybe to everyone its alright. Regardless of what I saw the Fiesta at least last night, was not all it was hyped up to be. There were TONS of people walking around and some music but thats it... nothing fancy.
Today however after storing our luggages and checking out we walked back to Las Ramblas and got a free tour of the Barcelona Cathedral, which I was wearing a tank top (it was 90 degrees plus) and had to buy a shawl cause I forgot about the dress code for those places. The Cathedral was crowded, beautiful in its architecture but so crowded we didn´t spend much time in it. We were continuing down las Ramblas toward the beach when we came across a street parade of these large giant figurines representing the patron saint of fiesta Mecri. By far it was the coolest part we´d seen involving the fiesta. After a long walk back to our hostel we are now just waiting till its time to board the train to Switzerland. A 12 hour ride Im not looking forward too... hopefully I can sleep.
